Neuromuscular Massage Therapy Explained

Neuromuscular Massage Therapy

What is Neuromuscular Massage Therapy?

Many of you may be wondering what neuromuscular massage therapy is and how it is different from a regular massage.

If you have ever experienced muscle strain, it’s usually a persistent pain or discomfort in the neck, back or shoulder. It could also be in other areas such as the arms, hands, or legs. Some people also experience a tingling or numbness in their leg, foot, arm, or hand.

These kinds of conditions can be alleviated by neuromuscular therapy, which is a special kind of deep tissue massage in which digital pressure is used to release points of strain in the muscle. These muscle strains are called trigger points, which is the reason why this type of massage is also referred to as trigger point therapy.

Trigger points are the knots that those with muscle strain usually feel. They are actually nodules about the size of peas that develop in injured muscles.

Overstraining the muscles can cause these hypersensitive areas, or trigger points, to contract. These areas are often blocked, hindering the flow of blood and nutrients. This results in pain, fatigue, and weakness in the muscle. It also causes referral pain, where areas that are far from the trigger points become painful as well.

If not correctly treated, trigger points may cause years of debilitating pain. The overall aim of neuromuscular therapy is to naturally align the body by balancing the muscular system, skeletal system, and the nervous system.

If you have ever experienced muscular pain or discomfort particularly in the neck, back, and hip area, this can cause a huge strain in your everyday routines because of persistent pain, muscle stiffness, and weakness. If you ignore this, it may eventually lead to debilitating pain. While a regular massage or spa treatment can help alleviate the pain, it only provides temporary relief. What you need is to neuromuscular massage therapy which effectively alleviates persistent and chronic muscular pain.

Who are NewLine clients?

NewLine gladly offers our services to anyone who has muscular pain. If you feel like you have knots in your muscles and you’re experiencing pain or discomfort in the lower back, upper back, neck, or hip, then I will be glad to work with you to help you find comfort.

NewLine also serves clients who have sciatica-like symptoms, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, calf cramps, reduced flexibility, jaw pain, or even knee pain.

Many of your everyday activities can cause trigger point pain. These are usually activities that have repetitive motion. Postural or muscular imbalances and reduced or restricted blood flow can also cause muscle strain. Some may need therapy after chronic physical or even emotional stress, or after an accident or fall.

What is a typical session like?

What NewLine offers is not a typical relaxation or spa experience, although when you request it I will be happy to provide it.

My sessions are unique because I approach each client differently, depending on their specific needs. If you are curious to know what a typical session is like, it usually begins with an assessment of injuries and types of pain that a particular client is experiencing in various parts of his or her body. It also helps to learn about a client’s health history and current condition. We will discuss things like lifestyle, daily routine, and stress level to gain insight to your unique situation.

Once these have been identified, the therapy session commences. It involves deep tissue massage techniques, stretching, and other practices that manipulate muscles and connecting tissues.

What techniques are used?

Neuromuscular massage therapists use their knuckles, finger, and elbows for treatment, applying continuous and consistent pressure over the strained muscle. This pressure actually helps in relieving muscle contraction, but if it is extremely uncomfortable or painful for you, let me know and the intensity will be altered accordingly. Stronger pressure may need to be applied to specific problem areas.

What are the benefits of neuromuscular massage therapy?

The consistent pressure applied during therapy improves blood circulation and reduces muscle soreness. The pressure therapy also helps nutrients and oxygen to flow easily.

After neuromuscular therapy, clients experience relief in problem areas. There is a significant reduction or complete elimination of pain. There is also greater strength, flexibility, and ease of movement. Many clients also experience increased energy and improved posture after their sessions.
